Grevy’s Zebra: The Striped Beauty of Samburu

The Grevy’s zebra is taller, more elegant and noticeably different from the zebras many visitors are familiar with. Its narrow, closely spaced stripes give it a striking appearance, while its large rounded ears and white belly make it easy to recognise once you know what to look for.And if you are exploring Samburu National Reserve, there is a good chance you will have the opportunity to see one.

What Makes the Grevy’s Zebra Special?

The Grevy’s zebra is the largest of the three zebra species in the world. Unlike common plains zebras, its stripes are narrower and more numerous, and the stripes do not extend all the way underneath its belly. It is also remarkably well adapted to the dry landscapes of northern Kenya. Grevy’s zebras can survive for long periods without drinking, getting much of the moisture they need from the grasses and plants they eat.

But there is something else that makes seeing one special.

Grevy’s zebras are endangered. Their numbers have declined significantly over the years, making every encounter in the wild a poignant reminder of why protecting Kenya’s wildlife and its habitats is crucial.

Why See the Grevy’s Zebra in Samburu?

Samburu is one of the best places to experience the unique wildlife of northern Kenya. The Grevy’s zebra is one of the Samburu Special Five, alongside the gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich.

Picture yourself on an early morning Samburu safari, the landscape still cool and quiet, when a herd of these beautifully striped animals appears across the plains.

It is one thing to see a Grevy’s zebra in a photograph. It is another thing entirely to stand quietly in the wild and watch one walk past. That is the magic of Samburu.
